Diane Brennan - City Council

My vision for Nanaimo is built upon the City's Official Community Plan and our many extensive citizen engagement processes during the past term. Since 2011 council has met with citizens and stakeholders and had in depth discussions about the kind of city our residents want Nanaimo to be.

The City's Strategic Plan restates our commitment to the four pillars of sustainability: social equity, environmental responsibility, economic health and cultural vitality. It also clearly identifies strategic priorities more directly aligned with traditional municipal functions.

The Climate Sustainability Action Plan identifies specific actions that refer back to the goals identified in planNanaimo. This document recognizes that climate change has global implications to ecosystems, infrastructure and people. Local governments – given their vulnerability to climate impacts and their authority and opportunity to influence change – will be key players in addressing this defining issue of the 21st century.

Our Transportation Master Plan adds to our commitment to sustainability. Principles identified through consultation created a vision for a future transportation system that provides mobility across all transportation modes that is safe, connected, sustainable, affordable and accessible for residents of all ages and abilities.

Nanaimo's Cultural Plan is beginning to unfold and take effect. We will have an expanded Port Theatre that includes a waterfront Community Performing Arts Centre that will be the jewel in our crown.

Finally, my vision for Nanaimo rests heavily upon the Neighbourhood Plans we have developed over the past decade. By using an intensive community engagement method, Nanaimo has created plans that reflect our vision for safe, healthy, sustainable and diverse neighbourhoods.

I am proud of the community engagement processes the City has used to move us steadily forward into an optimistic future. I am confident that I have the leadership skills to help Nanaimo continue along the road to becoming a vibrant and prosperous 21st century city.
