Jack Arnold - Candidate for council

I have been fortunate and privileged to work in Nanaimo since 1969, when I started to teach high school at the age of 19. I have taught over three generations of the Nanaimo citizenry through my years at John Barsby Secondary school and also presently at Wellington Secondary school.
During this time, I have made generations of friends and acquaintances and feel I have a good understanding of the feelings and concerns of a large section of our population. If I am fortunate to be elected, I will retire and dedicate myself to a full time commitment on council.

My Involvement over 36 years coaching in the school sports system in  Basketball, Soccer, and Track and Field. over 25 years of coaching and involvement with Community sports programs in the areas of Soccer, Softball, Lacrosse, and Hockey. Ten years of running Summer Basketball programs in Nanaimo in association with School District 68, 6 year involvement with Larry McNabb’s Nanaimo Hockey Program, 3 years as Head Coach of Nanaimo Minor Hockey as well as coaching for 12 years.
Member of the Vancouver Island Exhibition Committee from 1995-1999 while running my orchard business.
NDTA Bargaining team member for 7 years
Staff Rep (Shop Steward) for 25 plus years of my teaching career
40 year memeber of both the Teacher’s Unions; the NDTA, and theBCTF.
Member of the ” Smokin’ Oldies Car Club”, in Nanaimo
A 40-year member of the British Columbia Hot Rod Association provide the American Universities SAT training for all those student athletes who are trying to obtain sports scholarships to universities… ( a volunteer for 10 years with Nanaimo Clippers in that capacity)
graduation rides provided in my vintage “hotrod”  every graduation year for students who are looking for a “one-of” experience and do not have the financial ability to pay for it.

A little about me – Raised in Penticton , the son of the owner of a small business and an accountant for a mother, I graduated in 1966.
Attended Simon Fraser University and obtained a B.A. degree in Western Canadian Studies (history) and a B.ED.  degree.

Moved to Nanaimo in 1969 to begin a  career ( currently of 40 plus years… the No. 1 person on the Seniority List, who would have thought…)
Except for a two year hiatus to teach for a year in Fernie, B.C. and to complete my degree in Vancouver, I have taught and do currently teach at Wellington Secondary school in the city
From 1992 to 2003, I lived in Nanoose Bay, and commuted to Nanaimo for both work and sports commitments.I built a small business, a working hobby farm . I grafted 1,800 apple trees and raised them to a producing crop of organic fruit. As well, the operation included organic  poultry production. This was a viable small operation which gave me a wonderful insite into the possibilities of agricultural endeavors here in the area. There are truly options that should always be remebered.
I currently live with my best friend and life partner, Tammie Green, and we both truly love our lives here in Nanaimo. We have an extended family which includes my two children Frank and Britt, who went to school here but now live in Victoria and Burnaby respectively with their families, and Tammie’s three children , David, Andrew, and Jessica, who live with their respective families here in Nanaimo. We are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren.
